BBC News: Two million taking antidepressants for five years or more

Written by: | Posted on: | Category:

In a recent news article and accompanying Panorama documentary, the BBC has reported that more than a quarter of patients on antidepressants in England, roughly two million people, have been taking them for five years or more. This is despite limited evidence of the long-term benefits of these drugs and rates of depression continuing to rise.

While antidepressants can be life-changing medications for some, they may not be the right solution for everyone. One major concern with long-term antidepressant use is the challenge of withdrawal. Patients who have relied on these drugs for long periods may experience withdrawal symptoms when attempting to stop, making it difficult to stop taking the medication.

Alternative therapies, such as hypnotherapy, can help lift depression and calm the exhausted mind through practical advice, learning deeply relaxing techniques to break unhelpful patterns, and setting tangible goals.

It's important to remember that depression is a complex condition with no one-size-fits-all solution. It may be that a combination of approaches and lifestyle changes will be needed to create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Although you will currently find anxiety (a symptom of depression) available to book as part of the Everyday Emotional Health sessions, I don't currently offer depression as a bookable option. This will change in the future, but for now, if you are interested in hypnotherapy for depression, please get in touch by sending me a message.
